About

The Lazy Daisy Rug is an area rug made of hexagon squares patched together. The pattern contains instructions for two sizes; see “Sizing” below for more details.

This pattern is also beginner-friendly, with step-by-step photos for every single part of the pattern and links for more advanced techniques, like whipstitch.

This was my first-ever non-wearable pattern, and it was a fun exercise in trying to figure out how to write an instructional guide for a totally new kind of project! I was originally just making it for my own room, but once a couple people on Instagram responded to my WIP pictures asking for a pattern, I was determined to deliver for them — and here we are!

Sizing

There are two different sizes available for the rug, as is detailed below. The photos you see were made in the standard rug size, which is about 4.5ft x 4.5ft.

The following sizing & yardage chart is straight from the pattern PDF:

Materials

Hook: 5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions:

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

  • Stitch markers

Yarn: Worsted/aran/size 4; for amount needed for each size, see sizing chart above

I've used acrylics like Lion Brand Pound of Love and Red Heart Super Saver to make this. I recommend using a similar acrylic or wool for your own project; you can find good substitutes on yarnsub.com.

Always make a swatch before beginning to make sure you meet gauge (also important so your rug isn’t too big or too small) and are happy with the fabric created!

Gauge

Note: For a patchwork pattern like this, the size of the hexagon is the most important part of meeting gauge. I'd recommend making a hexagon first before a swatch; instructions for the square and for the gauge below are included in the pattern.

4 x 4 in (10 x 10 cm) = 15 sts and 7.5 rows in double crochet

If your swatch is too small, try using a bigger hook. If it's too big, try using a smaller hook.

Sizing: This design is written for two sizes, as detailed in the “Sizing” section.

Construction: This design is worked first in individual squares, then the squares are sewn together into rows, then rows are sewn together to make the rug. Finishing details are then completed.
